SANTORINI VOLCANO

 Santorini Volcano

The volcano of Santorini Koloumbos is an active submarine volcano located 6.5 kilometres northeast of Santorini, which belongs to the volcanic arc of the southern Aegean. Became known after a large volcanic eruption on 27 September 1650. From lava formed a small island, which, however, due to sea waves, quickly collapsed into reef. Since the collapse was caused a tsunami, which caused damage up to 150 kilometres. Today it has a height 280 meters (relative to the surrounding seabed) and is located approximately 18 meters below sea level. The crater has a diameter of about 3 km and a depth of 512 meters. In a large area around the volcano have been identified hydrothermal wells from which hot water gushes up to 220oC, with dissolved minerals, which are home to a rare ecosystem of filamentous bacteria.

The area of Koloumbos forms a small cove. At approximately 6 km to the north there is the underwater crater of Koloumbos, which was formed in 1650 AD, after a powerful volcanic eruption. After that explosion, which resulted in 50 people dead, many more dead animals and even more losses to crops, was build the temple of "our Lady of the Good" as an attempt pleasure of the people by the end of this unfortunate situation. In fact there are written narratives, anonymous verse and prose and a brand-name written by K.Daponte. In fact, there is also evidence from the French priest Francois Richard, who published descriptions of the tragic incident a few years later.
