Places to visit in Santorini
The capital of Santorini, Fira, is one of the most beautiful places of
the island, with beautiful views of the caldera and the location on a
cliff about 300 meters from the sea. Stand white houses and blue domes
of the houses. Bars, shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels and streets
features complete the picture. Many churches like the beautiful Orthodox
Cathedral from 1827 that was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1956, with
views of the volcano and the sea. The museums of Fira are worth
visiting, among these include the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, Santorini
Archaeological Museum which houses a collection of sculptures, vases and
other artefacts from the Archaic period to the Roman Villa and Megaron
Gyzi, which contains maps, old and new photographs and paintings.
The village of Imerovigli located near to Fira. Here you can reach the
cliff and olf castle of Skaros which offers a beautiful view. Here you
can admire the remains of the old fortress of Skaros, while on the rock
of the cliff, there is a small church built to commemorate the
earthquake of 1956.
Oia for most of the Santorini visitors is the place with the most breath
taking views over the caldera with its blue waters dotted here and there
by cruise ships and yachts. The houses are typical of the Cyclades
islands, white, while others have stronger colours like the deep blue.
Here you can visit the Naval Museum of Oia and you can stop in the
beautiful beaches of Armeni and Amoudi, reached through steps.
Kamari is one of the most interesting places and beaches of Santorini,
you can go there by bus. Next to Kamari is the site of the the ancient
Thira, and the rocks along the road you must travel is so breathtakingly
beautiful. Arriving at the excavations, you can admire the remains of an
ancient Christian basilica, the foundations of temples and houses, an
amphitheatre and the timeless beauty of ancient frescoes.
The village of Pyrgos, located in the northern part of Mount of the
Prophet Elijah , surely the most picturesque and one of the oldest
villages of the island. Here you can admire a Venetian fortress and
beautiful vineyards and a monastery of the eighteenth century which
houses ancient manuscripts and ethnographic material.
Akrotiri, in the southern island, is home to an old village, preserved
under a thick blanket of ash and unearthed in the late '60s. Evocative
view of the caldera of the volcano. The Old Town has three-storey houses
with rooms full of ancient relics, including the large vessels intact,
an advanced hydraulic system that brought water to the home, including
hot water from the nearby volcanic sources and an impressive number of
paintings (most which are now in the Archaeological Museum of Athens)
that describe the life of the time.
The archaeological area of Mesa Vouno once housed the settlers of the
Lacedaemonians (from the region of Sparta). Historical records tell us
that the town of Mesa Vouno was the only urban center of the island from
the ninth century until the advent of Christianity.
Later we find the Sanctuary of Artemidoros, built into the rock around
400 BC Beautiful inlays and inscriptions with symbols of gods, the eagle
of Zeus and the lion of Apollo. Towards the center of the city is the
marketplace, the Agora, while to the north are the remains of a Doric
temple.
